How to add Videos to your Space and blogs

There are multiple ways to play video's on your space. you can play them using various gadgets, media players, html modules and in your blog entries. This is the easiest way to get your video onto your space. I am sure there are many other ways, but they can be complicated and may require extra codes.

First, Choose the type of video:

  1. Video saved on your Computer
  2. A Video online

Video on your computer:

Create an account and upload your video to one of these video sharing sites:

  1. Soapbox (It will auto play your uploaded files)
  2. YouTube
  3. Metacafe
  4. Google Video
  5. Mixpo! (Can upload Pictures and Music too!)
  • After uploading, all these sites give you an embed code. Copy that code for future use.

(Skip the part below and continue reading from Step: 2 if you are carrying out this option)

A Video online:

Video's online can be found using search engines and then obtaining their URL/ Link. But these days most of the video's found online are on video sharing sites such as:

  1. YouTube
  2. Soapbox
  3. Metacafe
  4. Google Video

Also you may find them on other sites and all of these sites give you an embed code to the video. Copy this code as show indicated in the picture above, we will use them later.

Step: 2 - Now...Where do you want to play your video?

  1. On the front page of my Live Space
  2. In one of my blog entries

On the front page of my Live Space:

There are many ways this can be done:

  1. Using the Video Module that can be found in your Modules directory. Customize >> Modules >> Other >> Video ADD
  2. Using the Universal Video Gadget
  3. Using the Soapbox video Gadget
  4. Using the YouTube Video gadget
  5. Using the Google Video Gadget
  6. Using the HTML Sandbox Powertoy
  7. Using the Windows Media player
  • After getting the Universal player gadget, you can paste the embed code you got from any of the video sharing sites and click save. Easy!
  • The Soapbox gadget allows you to have your own playlist and you can play all your videos. After adding the gadget. Click on the edit/ add link on the gadget and you can upload your videos on the soapbox web site. these videos can be played on the soapbox gadget.
  • Using the Google Video and YouTube video gadget you get their embed code from their respective sites and paste it into the gadgets. Similar to the Universal Video gadget. I have linked a separate tutorial for each above.

All the Above gadgets and video modules have a border or title on them. To change it or get rid of the module follow the instructions below which I did for a HTML module which are similar for the above.

The HTMl box displays the Html title by default. You may not like it. If you want to change the title or even make the background dissapear so that you can use the box to dislay banners with out the obstructing border and background.

Click on the customize link on the right hand top corner and select Rearrange or hide modules from the drop down menu (again).

  • You will notice that the top right hand side corner of every module there will be an inverted triangle. Click on the inverted triangle found on the HTML module and a menu will drop down.
  • From the drop down menu, click on Preferences.

  • Another way to get a video onto your space is by using the Windows Media player. You can host your video onto any of these hosting sites and get the URL of the uploaded file. Paste this URL into your media player and click on save.

Note:- All of these gadgets and players can be put anywhere on the front page of your space. The video size will vary according to the gadget position and the layout of your Space.

Add video's in one of my blog entries:

  • Add a new blog entry or open an existing one in edit mode.
  • Click on the Embed Videos link found near the Add photos link. See picture below:

  • Paste the Embed code of your video you copied earlier and click Save.
  • You will notice the video is now in your blog entry. You can adjust the height, width of the video with your mouse. Also you can use the blog editing tools to make further adjustments like alignment.
  • After you are happy with the changes, publish your blog entry.
  • Preview your Space!

Note:- If it does not take your Code. Click the HTML button in your blog editing tools and then paste your code. Click on the button again to get out of the html editing mode and after making adjustment to your video. Publish your blog entry.

Done!

I hope this step by step tutorial was easy to follow. It got quite complicated and I had to edit it a lot. Any feedback or improvements are welcome!
