Live Spaces Vision - get blog updates in (near) real-time

So many blogs, so little time. There are over 112 million blogs on the Internet! How do you keep up? You can take Live Spaces Vision for a spin! Yea really, a spin! Beware not to get dizzy while this shows you all recently updated Windows Live Spaces. Watch that Virtual Earth globe go round and round and round....

You can watch in 2D or 3D, the first time you start 3D mode you will be asked to install Virtual Earth 3D. To tilt and rotate the map, hold the 'CTRL' key on the keyboard whilst pressing your left mouse button. Scroll the mouse to rotate the globe on its axis.

Looking for a specific (interest) blog? There's also Interest Space Mode, as shown in the picture above. Just type in your specific interest in the search box, click submit and of you go! Interesting what/who you can find that way...I found John Bruno, Lead Program Manager at Microsoft (picture above).

To go to the Live Space Profile, click on the thumbnail in the recently viewed window (I'll call it the Collection Bar). This bar is shown below the map, scroll down a bit if you don't see it, I had to as well. I just wish the thumbnails wouldn't disappear when the search starts over to give me some time to click on them...I didn't find a way to stop the search either...

Custom list description hack

Update: Wes just notified me that the Spaces team are going to re-enable list descriptions in the coming week, so carry out the following tutorial only if you cant wait and have to put a description for an important link.

After the recent updates to spaces, the descriptions on custom lists (when placed to the sides) do not appear. Many users have been unhappy with this. Through this simple procedure you can get descriptions onto the side as before...

First,

Sign into your space and click on the edit link found on any custom list that is on the side or create a new one.
Click on the Add item link and enter the description you would like to have for the link you are going to add to the list. Put this description into the link name field and leave everything blank as it is and click Save as show in the picture below...

Now click on the Add item link again and this time enter the link name and the link web address/URL in their respective fields and then click on the Save button.

All done! Now preview your space and your custom list placed on the side will have links with descriptions.

Note: Always enter the description item first and then the link info later on via a new item. Although this (your list) might not look good as before it is at least useful when you have to put a description to an important link.

Changing the http://cid URL's

For the past few months I have seen an increasing amount of comments which have URL's starting with cid. I just made a new dummy space and saw that Live Spaces does not give the option of choosing a space URL at the sign up stage like it used to before. Instead after signing up for a live ID you are given a space with a URL like: http://cid-8c5b859909977f69.spaces.live.com/.

You are also presented with a Getting Started/Welcome to your space module through which you choose the URL of your space. I think many people who are new to blogging or casual Internet users might miss this. I have also seen most of these spaces are set to private and comments cannot be returned which is an annoyance.

To change the cid url into something more memorable such as http://d3vmax.spaces.live.com , read on...

First,

Sign into your space with your windows live ID / email and click on the Your Space tab and enter your space.

Click on the Choose web address icon found on the Welcome to your space module that is present on your space.

Enter a space address/URL that you think is easy to remember so that it is easy to give it to your friends or family or just choose something cool and click on the Check availability button to see if it is available as someone might have already taken it. If it all good then click on the Save button and you have created a web address for your space which any one on the Internet can access. (If you have set it on public: Recommended)

Now go through the basic tutorials listed on this space and started learning about spaces and customisations.

p.s. Note in case you don't have the Welcome to your space module you can get it from Customize >> Add modules or you can get your web address from Options >> Space settings. Once you have selected your space web address/URL, you cannot change it. If you want to change it you will have to delete your space and create a new one (again from space settings) but do not that you will lose all your blogs/photos and just about every data you put on your space including comments.

Tip: Can't access spaces

Over the past few days I have not been able to access a few spaces and yesterday I got a scare when I could not access my own. I tried all day to no avail...

I could finally access it after I did a few things to my Internet browser...

I deleted my temporary Internet files and cookies. Also cleared my history and other things. After this I could access my space and other spaces that were public but which I could still not access.

Change the language of your Space to your default language

You are in the UK or the US but you visit someone's space which is in Turkish. You find your space headers and navigation and just about everything is in Turkish or any other language...

So unless you know Turkish and you are happy with the surprised change to your otherwise boring space you can try this out to get your space back to normal.

Sign out of your space if you are signed in. Then go to http://spaces.live.com/?mkt=en-us and try signing into your space. You space will revert back to English.

If you are a non-english users whose spaces have turned into English, You can try to get it back to your language by putting URL's such as

http://spaces.live.com/?mkt=it-it : For Italian

http://spaces.live.com/?mkt=de-gr : For German

And so on.. (Try searching for your country code and though trial and error, you will get it. If not, email me)

Secrets of Searching Spaces

Have you ever wondered… wow, there’s all of that stuff (blogs, photos, profiles, lists, etc.) in Spaces, but I just can’t find what I’m looking for using the Spaces Search? Well, I’m writing to share the Secrets of Searching Spaces. It may come as no surprise to you that the Search experience on Windows Live Spaces is powered by Live Search. We’re actually just using some publicly available features of Live Search.

Search Spaces Blogs

For starters, let’s say that we want to search for Spaces blog entries that talk about a specific topic, for example “Ms Dewey.” Of course you could go to Spaces to do your search, but this is about exposing the “Secrets of Searching Spaces” so let me show you how to do this using Live Search:
1. Go to Live Search (http://search.live.com)
2. Enter “Ms Dewey site:spaces.live.com meta:search.pt(blogs)”

Now I’ll explain:
· “Ms Dewey” are your standard keyword search terms
· The “site:” parameter scopes your search to URL’s that start with that site
· The “meta:” parameter tells Live Search to look for the meta word “search.pt” which contains “blogs.” Other “search.pt” metawords that you can use are “spaces” and “people” for the front page of a user’s space and the profile page respectively. Nikhil, who was the developer of our original Spaces Search experience tells me that “pt” stands for page type.

Search within a Space

One of the feature requests I hear from time-to-time is for the ability to search within a specific Windows Live Space. This can be done using the site: parameter. For example: “Ms Dewey site:robdolin.spaces.live.com meta:search.pt(blogs)” will search within my personal space for any blog entries about “Ms Dewey.”

Search within a Market

Another “secret” is to use the meta word “search.market” to search for spaces in a specific language or from a specific market. This uses market identifiers like “en-us” for English-USA or “fr-fr” for French-France. Windows Live Spaces supports about 35 markets (and hopefully more soon J.)

List of Meta Words

Below I have included a list of meta words that you can query on:
· search.pt – page type; values of “spaces,” “people,” and “blogs”
· search.st – space title; for example “Rob Dolin’s space”
· search.sa – space alias; for example “robdolin”
· search.market – the market code; for example: en-us, es-es, en-au, fr-fr

MVP, MVP summit and Spaces...

I am happy to inform you that I have received the 2007 Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for Windows Live. Thank you Microsoft and all my blog readers. It is a great honour for me.

I also attended the MVP summit that was held in Seattle/ Redmond for a week. Bill gates gave a talk and the summit covered many Microsoft products and technologies that are out there and also the ones that are under development.

I found quite a few talks interesting, especially the xbox demo many others were a bit dull, maybe I had already read about the product somewhere or was not interested in that field.

I am under a NDA so cannot discuss what I heard or saw but I can tell you that Microsoft is working on quite a few things at the moment and is leading in fields such as online gaming but playing catch-up on other fields. It has made mistakes in the past but it now rectifying those mistakes. keep your eyes and ears open, especially for new windows Live services.

Not much was discussed about spaces but I did get to have a sneak peek at the new spaces version currently under development. Again, I can't talk about it but you will be happy with many of the features they are going to introduce and will be left wondering, wow! why didn't they do it earlier? You will have more customisation freedom for your space, maybe enough to put me out of business! :O

A big thank you to the hard working Spaces team!

How to blog and circumvent banned or filtered words

Why did you blog this?

I believe in the freedom of speech. I hope people who live in countries where freedom of speech is restricted can blog and express their thoughts and concerns. We live in the 21st century and there certainly is no place for something so primitive when we have the technology in place to spread free speech!

On the Live Spaces platform you can blog any word(s) in the blog entry as far as I know, in the English interface. I do not know what exactly is restricted in countries such as China due to local regulations. I hope this generic guide helps in overcoming that restriction.

Attention!! -Attempt at your own risk, I am not responsible for anything you do or anything that might happen to you due to your actions. Stay smart! If you live in a country that does not allow free speech or restricts freedom of speech, you maybe monitored, traced and prosecuted. Therefore:-

Do not identify yourself.
Try not to blog about things that might give you away, like your locality. I know it sounds like a stupid thing to do but you maybe surprised how many people can get caught that way.
Signup for a new Hotmail or Gmail ID and do not use your personal details that might give you away while signing up.
Sign up for a Windows Live Space through this address: http://spaces.live.com/?mkt=en-us using your new ID. You will have an English interface space.
After setting up your space and you can blog words that are normally restricted in countries like China and the middle-east.
You can switch back to your local interface by changing the market URL and blog normally without any restriction. An example for Chinese spaces: http://spaces.live.com/?mkt=zh-cn

To blog banned words in your blog title or on any other blog platform.

If the method above does not work for you or you want to blog a banned word on a platform other than Live spaces use the method described below>>

For example, You publish a blog with the title ' Publishing a ***** word'

***** is the banned word. To avoid the computer from detecting the usage of a banned word, carry out the Alt 0160 procedure.

Put your cursor behind after the ***** word and hold down on my Alt key and press 0160.

It will appear as ***** , as the alt function you carried out generates a blank space and fools the computer into thinking it is a new word. If that does not work, carry out the step again and put a full stop or a comma after it.

***** .

Done!

You can now publish your blog with the banned word! This can be used for any banned word. Please use this information wisely and responsibly. This tutorial is for educational use only. I cannot guarantee you a 100 percent success.

Are you tired of your slow computer and the annoying (porn) pop-ups?

It maybe due to the hidden viruses, Trojans , spy/ad-ware running secretly in the background eating up your memory and also secretly sending information about your surfing habits to adware companies.

You need three basic softwares...

An Anti-virus
A firewall and
An Anti-spyware / Anti-adware

[You must also have a genuine copy of windows Xp/ Vista running on your PC]

First download an Anti-virus software that uses minimal system resources. http://www.eset.com/, Avast and AVG are a few options.

Then go download Windows Defender beta. It is a fantastic free MS product that does the job of a firewall, anti-sypware and anti-adware all in one, quick and user friendly and protects your PC without you realizing it. Click here to go to the download page.

After downloading and installing these softwares, get updates for them.
Disconnect from the internet by removing your Ethernet/dial-up cable from the socket or switch off your Wi-Fi connection
Unintall Norton or any Anti-virus/spyware/adware softwares that you had before. They are expensive; don’t do the job half the time and hog up your system resources. They also require a start-up each time you update them (which is nearly everyday)

Well once you have done this...

Run a scan on your newly installed anti-virus and anti-spyware softwares and get rid of all the worms, virus. trojans, spywares. They will weed out most of the problems faced by average computer users.

Re-connect your cables or switch on the Wi-Fi connection and surf the net without any frustration or fear.
Done!

Tips:-

It may also help if you use the Internet Explorer 7 or the Flock browser to browse the internet, instead of the old IE6 and Firefox.

Go to Add/Remove programs via Control Panel and look for any toolbar softwares that you don't recognise. Like google and Yahoo toolbar for IE/Firefox are fine but if you got something like 123 search toolbar or any other wierd sounding toolbar(s), uninstall it straight away as they display ads and pop-ups to you and hinder your browsing/Spaces experience.

This article is just a how to on how to fix the following problem:

When I try to view the main page (visitor mode) of my Windows Live Space in IE 6, IE crashes.

OR

I can't get to my Windows Live Space because Internet Explorer crashes when I try to access it.

This problem is typically caused by malformed HTML in one of the blog entries. Very complex web pages (like a Windows Live Space) that have a certain type of malformed HTML can cause IE 6 to get caught in a loop and crash. The HTML Filter in the Windows Live Spaces blog editor can be used to fix this problem as follows:

Go to http://spaces.live.com/ and click the Sign In link in the upper right hand corner.
Sign in with your Windows Live ID (formerly known as passport).
This should take you to the Author view of your space, and IE should not crash. (If IE does crash at this point you may have a different problem and may need more help. If this is the case drop me a line at joseph.bono@hotmail.com).
Click on the title for your Blog module to bring up the Editing Blog full page view.
Click on the title for the first blog entry, which will take you to the preview page for this blog entry.
Click the <HTML> link in the blog editor, then click the Publish entry button.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each of your blog entries

Hack for sorting your friends

When you’re adding notes and tags to your friends, you can also choose where you’d
like your friends to appear in your friends list—near the top, near the bottom, or
“doesn’t matter.” These settings aren’t absolute; if you have 15 friends and would like
them to appear “near the top,” you won’t know exactly where they will appear in
those first 15 positions. But this does give you some basic sorting ability in case you
want to make sure a family member isn’t relegated to the fifth page!

However, you can use a little trick to make sure one of your friends appears exactly
where you’d like them to appear in your list. You do this simply by adding a special
tag to your friend to indicate their exact sort position. Give one of these a try:

Add “Sort:1” as a tag (no spaces, no quotes) to your best friend. When you
click Done on the Edit page and return to the main page, your best friend
should appear first in your list!

Add “Sort:1000” as a tag to the person on your list you rarely talk to anymore.
When you click Done on the Edit page and return to the main page,
this person should appear in the last position on the list.

These tags don’t show up as viewable tags applied to your friends; the system
automatically hides them. If you’d like to change the sort position of one of your
friends, all you have to do is add the tag again with the new value. For example,
if the person you placed at the end of the list gets you a really great gift for your
birthday, you can promote them to the second position just by adding “Sort:2”
as a tag.

Note that if you mistakenly tag two friends with the same position (say, “Sort:1”),
the system will randomly make a determination as to whom should appear first,
but their relative position in the list will be maintained. In other words, your
friends would randomly appear as first and second if they were both tagged with
“Sort:1.”

Centre the Space Title and tagline position

Hate the new Title and tagline position?

Does not work anymore. Please do not try it!

Get your title and tagline to be displayed in the centre.

· Sign into your Space and click on the 'edit' link on the Title and tagline module.

· Get our cursor in front of your Space title and hold down on the alt key.

· Press 0160 then. Release the alt key. (You need to have Num Lock on and use the number key pad on right side of keyboard )

· You will notice that the Space title has moved one space to the right.

· Keep repeating the alt 0160 method , save and preview your space to see if you like the result. It is more of a trial and error method.

· Carry of the same steps for the tagline.

Note: Pressing alt 0160 can get tiring so after doing it a couple of times, copy the blanks made and keep pasting (ctrl+v) it in front of the space title and tagline.

Track Comments on your MSN Space

Are you getting more than 5 comments a day and finding it difficult to keep track of them?

Go to any Blog entry whose comments you want to track.

In Internet Explorer 7 you will notice the Orange RSS symbol. Click on the Arrow next to it and from the drop down menu select on 'Comments on:blah blah blah' to subscribe to comments. Any new commes made will come to your RSS feedreader (in this case IE7's inbuilt RSS feedreader) See the picture below for a better understanding.

With the recent update on Live Spaces, you can now get recieve comment alerts. First make sure you have the Vistor tools module enabled from Customize >> Modules >> Spaces tools >> Visitor tools add

Then..

Simply click on the “Sign up for alerts” link in the Visitor tools module of your favorite Spaces (Or your space) and start receiving your updates (recent comments) right away into your email or your mobile device.

So this way it is much faster and easier than the way described below...

I tried co.mment and coComment. They don’t work well in tracking comments for MSN Spaces.

It is a simple and no hassle service that will keep track of the number of comments in your blo

Sign up for the service and sign in.
Get the URL/Permalink of the blog entry whose number of comments you want to keep track of.
Add it to commenful and it will keep track of the comments on that blog entry for you by displaying the number of comments there are on that blog
Done!

Now,

You can use this to keep track of any blog(s) you like, or any debate you are having. If there is a new comment added you will know and can go to that page and have a look at it.

I suggest you add all the new entries you publish to commentful , that way you can keep track of all of them from a single page.

Note:-

Don't just put in your Space URL. Add the full permalink/URL of the specific blog entry.

Own Space T-shirts

Overview:

Create a T-shirt Shop
Design Logos or text relating to your space
Link Shop to your space.
Let other's know about your views or space through your T-shirts or just design a logo and buy one yourself.

Visit:

Click on the 'Open Shop' Icon or Sign up/Register link anywhere and put in the details asked from you.

It takes less than 2 minutes. They will email you your password to get into your account. After which You can put in other details like your address and billing address.
Now that you have your own T-shirt Shop...
Create your own logos, relating to the subject of your space or anything you wish. Default designs are there too if you can't think of anything. The whole layout is really simple and easy to navigate and self-explanatory.

Well, once you are happy, you can link your shop to your space either in your blog entry or in a custom HTML module (Like I have done) or a custom list on the side.

You can tell your friends or random people visiting your space to have a look at it and see if they are interested in buying your smart T-shirts.

Well, what happens if you don't sell any. Nothing. You don't owe Spreadshirt anything. When someone decides to buy your t-shirt, Spreadshirt handle's the billing, production and Shipping. You have to just sit back and collect the commission they give you and also design more logos.

Problems with Photo Upload & Profile

Despite all permissions being Public visitor can't see my profie info or picture !

solution: Delete your Profile. Then remove your profile module from your space and re-add it. This will reset all permissions and then maybe you can have a working profile again.

I can't upload my pictures.

solution: Disable your firewall or change your firewall settings. Add msn spaces to your trusted sites list in the internet options. Problems occur mainly with people using norton anti-virus popup blocker.

If this doesn't work try:

Go to your internet options.
Delete all Temporary internet files and cookies.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. [google if you don't know how to]
Search for MSN Photo Upload tool.
Delete it.
Disable your pop-up blocker.
Sign into your msn space.
Try Adding a photo.
You will be prompted to install the Photo upload tool. Install it.
Upload your photos.

Also you can try reducing your browser's security level. Download the latest Internet Explorer 7

If nothing works, you can upload photos manually 7 at a time using Firefox

Your own Space's Search

Click here to see a slideshow and follow the instruction on it. After that is done. Follow instructions below:

After having got your space search URL [Instruction from slideshow], you need to link it on your space in either a blog etnry, a custom list or custom html module.

On a custom list...

Create a custom list. [Customize >> modules >> custom list add]
Click on the 'Add item' link and put in the info that is required; like , 'link name' = Search my space or Space search; In the URL or web address vlock.. put in the URL got from above [See slideshow]
Click 'Add' or 'Save'
Done!

In a blog entry...

Create a new blog entry.
Press the <html> button in the blog editing tools.
Paste the code below after substituting the required info, like URL and link name.
<a href="space search url here">Search my space or any other name here</a>
Press the <html> button again and make any final changes.
Publish your blog entry.
Done!

In a custom html module...

Get one if you dont have one.
Paste the code below after substituting the required info, like URL and link name.
<a href="space search url here">Search my space or any other name here</a>
[optional] You can also link it to pictures or other things. [See other tutorials, all info is on my space if you look a bit closer]
click 'Save'.
Done!

Use a service like http://tinyurl.com/ to shorten the long space search URL so that you can and it around..

It is the map of the whole world but if you live in the US you get a more detailed view of your city and also satellite close ups. No! It is not in real time, so don't think you can see yourself waving.

Getting to the point...

There is an option of putting a Pin on your location on Earth [Antarctica included].

Right click on a the map, preferably somewhere close to where you live. Select the 'add pushpin..' option from the menu that drops down. Enter your info and click 'Save'. A scratch pad onto your right will display things like you pushpins, email , blog it! [See picture below for a better idea]. Now click on the 'blog it!' link. That will make you sign into your space and open a blog entry automatically. It will contain the link to you pushpin for others to view.. something like this >>

Dealing with an unknown error

I have been asked by so many people about different kinds of random errors and most of the time this procedure has worked to solve them...

Getting an error that says "Catastrophic error. Please stand by" while trying to publish a blog entry.
Your Theme is not loading up properly ?
Cannot sign in ? Or upload Pictures ?

Try doing this Procedure for any error or problem. There are chances that your problem might go away...

Go to Internet Options from either the control panel or select 'Internet Options...' from the 'Tools' tab in IE window.
Click on the 'Clear History' button. Click 'Yes' when prompted.
Click on the 'Delete cookies...' button. Click 'OK' when prompted.
Click on the 'Delete Files... ' button. Check the delete all offline content box and click 'OK'
Press 'OK' to exit the Internet Options window and see if your problem has gone away...

If the layout our space is spoilt and your space is acting funny. Sign into your space. Remove the HTML modeule / Sandbox / Any other powertoys that you may have added. And see if it helps. If not then try removing your recent blog entries as spme code you might have put in, must be affecting your space.

Re-arranging links in a custom list

Sign into your Live Spaces account

Click on Your Space button on the What's new page. You will be in the edit/owner mode of your space.
You will notice there is an Edit link on every custom list module. Click on this link.
You will be in the list edit mode and will notice that your links are arranged according to the numbers in the order field. If you want to change the order simply replace the numbers in this field according to your choice.

Done!

Whenever you save content to a list that new content automatically goes to the bottom so:

Go to the list page at the top of your space while you are in editor mode
Click on the list you want to edit.
Click on the item you want to go to the bottom of the list
Click edit
Click save (Do not change any content).
Click preview my space and the item you just edited will be at the bottom of the list.

You can do this as many times as you want until you get the list in the right order.

Can't see the Photo album ?

When you get a link for your space after it's translated into many languages , either through Google translate or some other service , Visitor having reached your space through this link can not see the photo album.
Same applies when you are visiting a space through a shortened URL. See the tutorials for a an idea of what I am talking about.

Shorten your Space URL | Display Languages

So Next time when you are visiting a space through a shortened link or a translation service link and cannot see the photo album . Please carry out the following steps to do so.

Click on the Tools tab on your IE browser. Go to Internet options .
When on the internet options window, click on the tab titled 'Security '.
Then click on the icon that says trusted sites.
Add the site you are visiting [and cannot see the photo album .. if present i.e.] to the list of trusted sites.
Click Add and then Ok.
Next time you visit the space/ site you will be able to view the photo album.

Taking content from my space

An increasing number of are people taking my work and putting it on their space without proper credits to me and others involved. I hope you appreciate my work and co-operate with me.

You are allowed to post content from my space onto yours only if the following conditions are met :

Create a Blank Titled Custom List or Space Title

Go to the input field [place where you name your custom lists]
Press the spacebar key
Click okay or Save.
Done, You have created a nameless customlist.

To get a untitled Space header. Go to the input field of your Space title. Hold down on the Alt key and press 0178. You will be able to click on save without having anything in your space title or tagline region.

Easy!
